Felted necklaces, cosy neckwear

So I have been playing around with accessory ideas for the past few months, trying to come up with designs that work with my cushions and critters. After making purses and brooches I thought maybe making some jewellery, not something I have tried to make before. I settled on the idea of a necklace that looks a bit like it’s part of a top, a statement necklace, something chunky and unique. As I work with felt I knew it would be hard to create something delicate, and it wouldn’t fit with my other work if I went too much towards precious fragile looking jewellery. I settled on two designs after a lot of experimentation, one made of felted pompoms, that create dense beads, and another which incorporated glass beads in the felting process. It was fun to make products that were out of my comfort zone, plus I enjoyed incorporating a little fox head into my critter necklace 🙂 Below you can see the latest additions to my accessories collection, sunart necklace and critter necklace. What do you think? Would you wear them?

Dog Cushions

I have recently completed a dog cushion collection inspired by British dog breeds. After the popularity of my corgi cushion last year and the commission of other dog cushions, bull terrier, labrador, spaniel etc, I thought it would be fun to make some other breeds into cushion form. The focus of this collection, as sated above is British dog breeds, I chose collie, scottie dog and a different colour combination of my corgi cushion. I really enjoyed looking a pictures of dogs, and drawing them to create this collection as I love dogs so much. After growing up with many cavalier king charles spaniels I missed having dogs around when I moved away to university, and also when I moved to the Netherlands almost four years ago. Then almost two years ago we got our own dog, Alvar the cardigan corgi, and he is the main inspiration behind my dog cushion collection. I hope you like the cushions, and they are currently for sale in my online shop for £55. Each cushion is approx. 40 x 40 cm, is made from felted lambswool and has a zip fastening.

Alex the Cat Brooch

The other week I decided to make a brooch version of my critter Alex the Cat, I love making miniature versions of my critters so I can wear them around. I have a viola on my jacket and often have butterscotch adorning cardigans and tops. I love to make brooches from my felt, and although these quirky little characters aren’t made of silver or gold I think they manage to to finish off an outfit, and also cheer up your day, I know that I smile every time I see one of my little critter brooches 🙂 You can purchase your own alex brooch from my online shop for only £12. He is made from the same fabric as critter alex, knitted and felted lambswool, and is stuffed with 100% polyester.

Chair

In 2010 my boyfriend and I decided that we wanted to buy furniture from secondhand shops that we could then restore and upholster in my fabric. Fast forward 3 years and we have finally completed our first project! It has taken a long time to finally complete our first chair, and we have learnt so much about how to restore a simple dining room chair, from the stripping, to wood treatment up to upholstery. The Upholstery is my own project, and using very helpful upholstery step by step book I think my upholstery complements the chair beautifully and I think I’m now ready to try some other upholstery projects. I currently have 4 chairs and a stool to do, one day we will have a house full of refurbished furniture, but it may take some time! The next few weekends have been cleared of all other tasks so we can finally finish off our current restoration projects 🙂

This chair we bought for €3.50 and look pretty awful when we got it, the upholstery was falling apart, and the wood finnish was scratched and worn. Here are some before and after photos of said chair.

I think in 2013 I will be undertaking an upholstery course so I can learn how to upholster all kinds of furniture and then hopefully I can start selling furniture upholstered in my own fabric 🙂

Cushions

So I finished working on my new products a few weeks ago, but have been very slow with the blogging. This post is about the 2 new cushions I have added to my collection for 2013. Sunart cushion and Iona cushion. I have decided to move more towards the cut out techniques that I used during my final year of university, as I am lacking a laser cutter that helped produce the intricate designs I did back then, my new cushions are hand cut. Both designs are inspired by the Scottish landscape, and the cushions are both backed in silk that has been hand stitched to the felt fabric.

Both cushions are named after places in Scotland, an island and a loch. I decided to use Scottish place names to name my collection to tie the designs to the areas that inspired me.

Scarf Time

Some other new additions to my collection for 2013 are these two circle scarves. Both are inspired by scottish plant life. I took lots of photos of plants in the  Highlands whilst I was on holiday in the Summer. Not only have they influenced my pattern design but they have also inspired my colour palett. This has led to brighter more vibrant colours for this collection.

2013 Critters

A new year and two new critter friends 🙂 Some of the older critters are heading off for early retirement, but there are new critters about town. Meet Alex and Emilie. Alex is lovely ginger cat, he is best friends with Emilie the Owl. He loves to chase balls of wool and lounge in the sun. Emilie is a purple owl, she is an awesome owl that loves to fly through the night sky and host owl parties in her favourite tree.
